Catch and Release - A conservation motion that happens most often right before the local Fish and Game officer pulls over a boat that has caught over it's limit.
Hook - (1) A curved piece of metal used to catch fish. (2) A clever advertisement to entice a fisherman to spend his live savings on a new rod and reel. (3) The punch administered by said fisherman's wife after he spends their life savings (see also, Right Hook, Left Hook).
Line - Something you give your coworkers when they ask on Monday how your fishing went the past weekend.
Lure - An object that is semi-enticing to fish, but will drive an angler into such a frenzy that he will charge his credit card to the limit before exiting the tackle shop.
Reel - A weighted object that causes a rod to sink quickly when dropped overboard.
Rod - An attractively painted length of fiberglass that keeps an angler from ever getting too close to a fish.
School - A grouping in which fish are taught to avoid your $29.99 lures and hold out for spam instead.
Tackle - What your last catch did to you as you reeled him in, but just before he wrestled free and jumped back overboard.
Tackle Box - A box shaped alarmingly like your comprehensive first aid kit. Only a tackle box contains many sharp objects, so that when you reach in the wrong box blindly to get a Band Aid, you soon find that you need more than one.
Test - (1) The amount of strength a fishing line affords an angler when fighting fish in a specific weight range. (2) A measure of your creativity in blaming that darn line for once again losing the fish.
Angler - An obsessed individual who owns a house that is falling down due to neglect, a truck whose color can best be described as Rust-Oleum, and a pristine boat that he chamois' down methodically before and after each trip.
Knot - (1) An insecure connection between your hook and fishing line. (2) A permanent tangle on your spinning reel which forces you to go out and buy a bigger, better, much more expensive rig.
Landing Net - A net used to help drag a large wiggling fish, or an inebriated fishing buddy, on board.
Live Bait - The biggest fish you'll handle all day.
Quiet Water - Your surroundings after you stop cursing your bad luck and fall asleep at the reel.
Skunked fisherman - One who returns to the boat ramp many, many hours after his buddies have gone home so that there are no witnesses to his catch or lack thereor.
Sinker - (1) A weight attached to a lure to get it to the bottom. (2) The nickname of your boat.
Thumb - A temporary hook holder.
Treble Hook - Triples the odds of your catching a fish. Quadruples the odds of your getting the hook caught in your thumb (see above).
Trolling - What you do after you've lost a $500 rod and reel set-up overboard.

Move to protect kelah

A second river flowing into Tasik Kenyir is now out of bounds to all fishing activities. This is to protect the kelah (Malayan mahseer), sought after for the dinner table and the ornamental fish trade.
The Sungai Petang was declared a kelah sanctuary last month, sharing the protected status the Sungai Cacing, which also flows into the lake, has had since 1986.
The river is now under the watchful eye of the Fisheries Department, whose officers have so far had to turn away three groups of anglers unaware of the new ruling.
Sungai Petang has a 10km shallow stretch which is a spawning ground for kelah and lampam. Being easily accessible by boat, the stretch was popular with both recreational anglers and commercial fishermen.
"The State government is considering similar protection for three other rivers — Sungai Petuang, Sungai Tembat and Sungai Terengganu Mati.
"We are protecting a heritage, "Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh told the New Straits Times. Some spawning grounds need to be protected and anglers can fish elsewhere in the lake."
Efforts are also being made to reduce the number of commercial freshwater fishermen.
"At the moment, we are not issuing new permits for commercial fishing in the lake," Idris said.

Mr. DHL sent me a text message asking me if I wanted to go fishing tonight. The thing is, the both of us haven't been doing any fishing for the past one month, as we were both very busy. Navin was busy with his sister's wedding arrangement, and I was busy with my sister's engagement arrangements. Navin told me that the pond near his house had recently been stocked up with fish. 100 plus kilo of baungs, rohus and patins.

I arrived at Taman Desa. As usual, out fishing NEVER seems to start on time. Navin had just got back from work and I had to wait for him to get ready.

Arrived at the pond. After buying our bait, we proceeded to one corner of the pond. This pond is not too big. Not recommended to use rods that are too long. I used a light tackle for this trip. Shakespeare rod paired with Abu Garcia Cardinal 302 reel spooled with 17lb mono line. Weight was a small ball sinker. Hook that I used was a Mustad size 1 circle hook.

There were small nibbles here and there. Must the baby lampams and baby tilapias disturbing my weight. Suddenly my rod tip twitched. I thought a small fish must be disturbing my bait. Then it happened..!!! My rod tip took a dip. I might have over reacted a bit. Since I was using a circle hook, there was no need for me to strike my rod too hard. I guess in my excitement, I gave my rod a firm strike. The fight didn't last long. Less than 5 minutes.

Arrived home. Damn fish was still alive. Bought 2 bags of ice from 7-Eleven and placed it in the cooler box with the fish.
